Live to Give Relief Organization, operating as Dress for Success Toronto, is seeking to fill two vacancies on its volunteer Board of Directors. Dress for Success Toronto has a skills-based Board and is looking to add one director with Governance expertise and one director with Senior Executive Leadership experience.

About Dress for Success Toronto

Dress for Success Toronto (DFS Toronto) is part of a global movement for change. We are a local affiliate of an international not-for-profit organization operating in over 143 cities in 23 countries. DFS Toronto is celebrating its 15th year of operations. Since 2009, we have helped approximately 20,000 women in the GTHA transition from unemployment to economic independence. We work together with agency partners, corporate partners, individual donors, and dedicated volunteers to make a meaningful impact in our Clients lives. We will soon be embarking on a new strategic plan process and are poised to take the next step in the growth and impact of Dress for Success Toronto.

  • Served 2,495 women
  • Revenues in excess of $1.2M
  • Provided 23,324 clothing items and accessories to women
  • Volunteers provided 6,452 hours of service
  • Delivered numerous career programs, including Mastering Your Job Search  Conference to 324 women and Ready Set Connect to 202 participants.
  • Delivered our highest revenue generating event in Dress for Success Toronto history – “An Evening with Lisa Laflamme” which raised almost $500K in gross revenue and generated over 15M total media impressions

Our Key Programs

Suiting & Styling Programs:

Provide professional attire and styling advice to individuals who are actively trying to enter or re-enter the workforce.

Each Client is paired with a volunteer Stylist, who provides a unique, one-on-one consultation and works with the Client to select professional attire that meets the Client’s needs, while expressing the Client’s personal style.

Career Learning Programs:

Free Learning Programs that provide the Client with the tools and resources to help accelerate their job search.

We support our Clients’ career development and build their confidence. These workshops are facilitated by our Corporate Partners, and provide Clients with the opportunity to learn directly from industry experts.

One-On-One Job Search & Career Support:

Through the Dress for Success Toronto Virtual Career Centre, Clients work one-on-one with one of our trained Career Specialists on topics of their choosing.

These personalized sessions focus on providing strategies to mitigate the challenges that may arise during a search for employment, or in the workplace.

The Working Women's Group (WWG):

Provides an environment for women to learn, grow, and share experiences by building their network and enhancing their professional development.

Membership is open to Dress for Success Toronto Clients who have successfully secured employment and who are seeking to advance their career.

About the Positions

The Board fulfills its governance and oversight responsibilities through Board meetings and Committee meetings. It also provides support to the President in various ways, including, strategic planning, fundraising, program development and in helping to establish policies and procedures to drive long-term success and sustainability.

Dress for Success Toronto is seeking two directors for its volunteer Board of Directors. In addition to serving as a Director, the individual will be expected to serve on one Committee. There are currently 5 Committees – Finance and Audit, Governance and Nominating, Human Resources, Marketing and Communications, and Fundraising.

Governance Position:

In addition to serving as a Director, this individual will also serve on the Governance and Nominating Committee.

For this position, we are seeking a candidate who has:

  • A law degree
  • Significant governance knowledge.
  • Director/governance accreditation is preferred
  • Proven Board experience
  • Prior work on a Nominating Committee would be an asset
  • Passionate about the work of Dress for Success and its mission
  • Strong business acumen
  • Previous Board committee experience, Chair experience would be an asset
  • Demonstrable experience as an independent, strategic thinker and team player who builds consensus and serves with integrity
 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise, oversee and assist with the leadership of Dress for Success Toronto to support the organization’s mission
  • Participate as a Member of the Governance and Nominating Committee
  • Provide oversight regarding the organizational finances, including approval and oversight of the annual budget
  • If required from time to time, assume the role of Board secretary, including working with the Chair and Vice-Chair, prepare and maintain the agenda of the meetings, meeting Minutes and decisions of the Board
  • Promote Dress for Success Toronto’s mission and programs to personal/professional contacts and the general public
  • Review meeting materials in advance and actively participate in meetings
  • Remain up to date on relevant best practices and legislation and assist with formulating practices and policies where needed
  • Other duties and responsibilities customary for a Board Director
 

Commitment:

  • Attend Board meetings – the Board meets approximately 7 times per year (most held virtually) for 90-120 minutes and otherwise as needed
  • Attend the Board Strategic Plan meetings (approx. 2 meetings)
  • Attend the Governance and Nominating Committee meetings (approximately 2-3 times per year for 90-120 minutes)
  • Support Dress for Success Toronto fundraising activities throughout the year, including attending Dress for Success Toronto events, securing prizing and assisting with corporate sponsors and ticket sales or other fundraising, and donor relationships
  • Contribute to the financial success of Dress for Success Toronto by making annual personal donations
  • Serve an initial three-year term with a maximum of two term renewals.

Senior Executive Position:

For this position, we are seeking a Board Director who has:

  • Senior executive experience at a Vice President or more senior role
  • Visionary leader with a strong business acumen and growth mindset, ideally with P&L responsibility
  • Experience leading a department
  • Responsibility for future forward thinking, including setting a corporate or a division’s direction
  • Direct experience with strategic planning and annual planning, including development of an operating budget
  • Experience in revenue generation, or in utilizing technology and data analytics for growth, would be an asset
  • Director/governance accreditation is desirable
  • Proven Board experience.
  • Previous Board committee experience, Chair experience would be an asset
  • Passionate about the work of Dress for Success and its mission
  • Demonstrable experience as an independent, strategic thinker and team player who builds consensus and serves with integrity
